Job Summary:
The Director of Security provides the security team's administrative leadership in planning, implementing, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating school safety and security programs for University School of Jackson. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for planning, program evaluation, education of employees, the safety of students, parents, and visitors to campus, and the overall security of USJ. The Director of Security works collaboratively to lead and nurture employees of USJ and to communicate effectively with parents, members of the community, and colleagues in other schools. Ability to manage safety and security budgets. Proficient in using a computer, organization software, and other office equipment, security systems, data, etc. Ability to compose correspondence and demonstrate strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. A calm, structured, and positive learning environment is a top priority for the school, and the security team plays a critical role in the school’s culture and climate. The role of the director is physically demanding as one would serve as the first line of defense to defuse potential serious incidents and require an immediate response.
General Responsibilities:
- Cooperation with school administration on creating and implementing school safety policies.
- Direct and manage USJ’s safety and security systems, protocols, and programs.
- Protect the buildings and grounds, including the perimeter, of USJ.
- Knowledge of Fire Code.
- Evaluation of school campus and surrounding areas for risk assessment.
- Investigation and tracking of incidents on campus or involving students, parents, and employees; security breaches.
- Responsible for programming and operation of the access control system.
- Plans, examines, analyzes, and supervises USJ’s school security operations, including physical security assets.
- Identifies and resolves security-related problems.
- Monitor video surveillance.
- Responds to situational emergencies.
- Oversight of building access.
- Conducts security and safety checks on a daily basis and keeps a log of all completed checks.
- Direct Traffic for morning and afternoon carpool.
- Fulfill duties associated with the post as part of the school’s comprehensive security plan.
- Actively respond to incidents, fights, or other issues in the school that threatens the safety of students, staff, and/or guests.
- Patrol and monitor school property for unauthorized persons. If needed, redirect or escort from the property.
- Report unusual activity or suspicions of safety issues to the Head of School in a timely fashion.
- Complete proper documentation related to incident reports and misconduct reports.
- Assist with on-campus searches.
- Knowledge of the USJ Student Code of Conduct.
- Satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
- Monitor school grounds and school entrances to ensure only authorized personnel and authorized visitors access the school.
- Actively participate in professional development training to ensure ongoing growth and to advance skills.
- As assigned, monitor and assist with the student entry and dismissal process to ensure safety.
- Build positive and professional relationships with faculty and students and leverage those relationships to establish and maintain productive and safe learning environments and common areas of the building.
- Exercise dignity and respect when interacting with school stakeholders at all times.
- Lead efforts to de-escalate inappropriate student behaviors.
- Serve as a primary participant in emergency response during crisis situations including but not limited to fire, tornado, and active shooter incidents.
- Serve as liaison with law enforcement when necessitated.
- Option for overtime via working evening events on campus.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Previous law enforcement experience is required. Experience in schools desired.
- Training or certifications in CPR, first aid, traffic, active shooter, and state certification are a must.
- Must enjoy working with children and adults in a school environment and have excellent interpersonal skills.
- Valid TN driver’s license and preferred CDL
- Knowledge of basic methods of providing site security and safety.
- Experience with technology systems utilized for school safety processes (i.e., camera systems or entry screening systems).
- Ability to work with adolescents in maintaining a positive and safe school culture.
- Team player and collegial with colleagues and administration.
- Exhibit passion and the ability to thrive amidst change and challenging conditions while maintaining a positive outlook and forward-looking perspective.
- Demonstrated ability to keep up with fast-paced environments and to multi-task.
- Sound judgment and ethical practice.
- Strong oral communication skills, human relations, and interpersonal skills.
- Successful completion of Security Training curriculum with associated training certifications as required by the state of Tennessee.
- Actively patrolling school property is critical in securing the building and maintaining a safe environment for students and staff. Applicants must be physically able to carry out day-to-day tasks inherent to the job.
