Fayette Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, co-educational independent school serving students from Pre-Kindergarten 2 through 12th grade. We are currently seeking a qualified Middle School English teacher to deliver daily instruction for grades 6 through 8.

The Middle School English curriculum is designed to develop strong language skills. Objectives include mastering grammar mechanics and various writing processes. Students will focus on sentence structure, fluency, and conventions through practical application.

Students will engage in diverse writing modes and genres, such as descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive, literary response, personal expression, and imaginative writing. Initially, they will organize their ideas into essays with clear introductions, detailed paragraphs, appropriate transitions, and conclusions while applying grammar skills. By the end of the course, students will complete a research paper using both primary and secondary sources.

The curriculum emphasizes grammar, literature, and composition, covering parts of speech, phrases, usage, and mechanics in grammar. In literature, students will explore short stories, poems, and novels. Writing assignments are integrated with literature studies, focusing on different writing styles and mechanics. Overall, the curriculum encourages students to read deeply and write thoughtfully while reinforcing their grammar and composition skills.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Commits to the ideals expressed in Fayette Academy’s Mission and Vision Statement
  • Plans, prepares, and delivers age-appropriate lessons for students entering middle school as well as school students preparing to transition to upper school
  • Maintains a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning
  • Selects and uses effective instructional methods, technology, and learning materials that engage all learners
  • Establishes a cooperative relationship with all students
  • Keep records of student progress and maintain open lines of communication with parents/guardians
  • Engages in professional growth activities
  • Works collaboratively with English department chair and faculty to maintain vertical alignment within the department
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of middle school students for the duration of their middle school career
  • Participates in responsibilities and duties outside of the classroom such as carpool and lunch coverage as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field, such as Education or English
  • State teaching license in the relevant field preferred
  • Prior experience teaching English preferred
  • Must successfully complete background screening and verification
  • Ability to use computers and technology including Google suite products
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with students, co-workers, and parents
  • Flexibility, self-reliance, teamwork, dependability, work ethic, problem-solving skills, and congeniality are essential
