8^th Grade Ukulele Teacher

The University School of Jackson seeks an innovative, expert band instructor for the 2024-2025 school. The band director will direct the Middle and Upper School Band and 8th-grade Ukulele and may also be asked to teach a general music course. The director will teach and incorporate a variety of string players and merge all levels of experience into various ensembles. The director will also lead an athletic band at all home and playoff football games, prepare and provide a student-based orchestra for two Upper School musicals yearly, and write, direct, and produce the orchestra for Middle School musicals. The Band Director should demonstrate a commitment to learning for all students by maintaining an organized classroom, presenting content-rich and standards-based lessons, and using various instructional strategies that reflect the USJ mission. Additionally, this team member should demonstrate strong leadership skills and may be asked to contribute to the broader life of the school through duties, advisory, and/or sponsoring extracurricular programs.

Qualifications

• Valid Tennessee teaching license.
• Member of NAFME, TMEA, WTSBOA, TBA
• Participate in Honor Band events.
• Participate in regional and state performances.
• Demonstrated competency in instrumental music.
• Knowledge of the overall operation of an instrumental music program.
• Knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
• Knowledge of state laws and rules and regulations governing band.
• Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
• Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

• Direct and manage the instrumental music and band program.
• Direct instrumental performers, including marching band, orchestra, concert band, soloists, and ensembles.
• Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student's eligibility for band participation.
• Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and theater productions.
• Develop and implement plans that fulfill the requirements of the school curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
• Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.

• Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

• Classroom Management and Organization.
• Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students' physical, social, and emotional development.
• Manage student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
• Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trip activities and arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
• Develop and administer budget based on documented program needs and ensure that operations are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
• Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
• Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets related to the program.
• Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all instruments and equipment.
• Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and other documents.
• Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
• Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
• Work and collaborate with other teachers in the Fine Arts Department.
