Job Summary: The 5th grade teacher is responsible for designing and maintaining a class environment that fosters the intellectual, social, physical, and faith development of children in the SDS lower school experience. In addition, the teacher is expected to demonstrate enthusiasm about teaching, getting to know, and celebrating boys. Daily instructional plans should reflect knowledge of best practices in differentiated instruction and pedagogical approaches that encourage curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic, Dominican Mission of St. Agnes Academy-St. Dominic School by living out the Dominican Pillars of Study, Prayer, Community, and Service

  • Contribute to the school community by attending school events, leading a club, coaching an academic team, or other initiative(s)

  • Engage in professional learning, including co-planning, department meetings, grade- level meetings, and other learning work

  • Build strong, lasting relationships with students, inspiring them to hold themselves to a high standard of academics and character

  • Demonstrate effective planning skills by preparing lessons designed to implement stated goals and objectives and by incorporating school curriculum objectives in lesson plans

  • Demonstrate teaching competency through current and thorough knowledge of curriculum and subject matter, effective communication with students, and classroom organization and management to maximize student time on tasks as well as motivate student learning

  • Demonstrate a variety of instructional methods and assessment practices to achieve specific curriculum objectives, to evaluate student progress toward mastery, as well to address individual student needs and interests

  • Establish a consistent disciplinary approach which promotes self-direction and positive self-image; set high standards for student behavior and manage inappropriate behavior effectively to provide a safe and optimal learning environment

  • Counsel students for the purpose of improving performance, appropriate behavior, problem solving techniques, and a variety of personal issues

  • Advise parents of student progress including communicating expectations; sharing student achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or to reinforce classroom goals at home

  • Monitor students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, dining hall, playground, school campus, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment

  • Cooperate with school administration; work effectively with all staff members to promote positive relationships with colleagues, students, and parents

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Dean

    An Ideal Candidate would possess the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education; Master’s degree preferred

  • One to three years teaching experience at the elementary level preferred

  • Experience with the developmental needs of 10-12 year old boys

  • Has a passion for teaching, getting to know, and celebrating boys

  • Ability and desire to collaborate with faculty, administrators, and parents.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Competency with instructional technology

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both in speaking and in writing.

  • Positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humor.
